Acusensus‘ partnership with Devon and Cornwall Police was recently highlighted in a BBC News article, which focuses on the impact of our road safety program. This initiative underscores the shared commitment Acusensus and Devon and Cornwall Police collectively have to improve driver behaviour and save lives on our roads.

In 2024, Devon and Cornwall Police became the first UK county to utilise Acusensus technology in the region in a long term program. This program aims to create a lasting change in behaviours to ultimately reduce road trauma. This is particularly important especially because, as highlighted in the BBC article, a significant proportion of young people aged 16 to 24 that were involved in fatal road accidents were not wearing seatbelts.

We are proud to support the UK’s Vision Zero initiative, committing to zero deaths and serious injuries across the road network. We look forward to continuing to work with our partners in the UK to work towards changing behaviours and saving lives.

Acusensus General Manager, Geoff Collins, joined BBC radio to discuss how Acusensus technology uses images of UK drivers to deter dangerous seatbelt and phone behaviour.

In the UK, roughly 50,000 drivers hold their mobile phone daily while driving, and roughly 500,000 daily journeys exclude seatbelt use (Department for Transport survey data). Essex will join 19 police forces across the UK who have already partnered with Acusensus to improve road safety.

Essex police force’s head of roads policing, Adam Pipe, called the photo results “phenomenal” and predicted this collaboration is likely to reduce road accidents. Acusensus is proud to partner with UK police departments to pursue our shared road safety mission to change behaviour, save lives and make the roads a safe place for everyone.

During September and October 2024, the Greater Manchester region trialled Acusensus’ Heads-Up solution. This initiative supports Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM) efforts to understand the scale of distracted driving and seatbelt non-compliance behaviours in the region.

The data collected during this trial will play a crucial role in shaping future education campaigns and enforcement strategies. This collaboration between Acusensus, AECOM and Safer Roads Greater Manchester is a key component to achieving Greater Manchester’s Vision Zero Strategy and Action Plan, which aims to eliminate road deaths and life-changing injuries by 2040.

The statistics are significant – in 2022, Greater Manchester recorded 71 traffic fatalities or serious injuries every month, with 64 lives lost over the year – 25 of them pedestrians. Each of these tragedies was preventable.

Geoff Collins, Acusensus UK General Manager, said: “This trial shows that some drivers on Greater Manchester’s roads are engaged in dangerous driving behaviours that put themselves and other road users at risk. We can now use this knowledge to intelligently address the problems, making each journey safer for everyone.”

Together we’re working towards safer roads and a more secure future for everyone. We look forward to continuing this important work in the UK.

Acusensus is excited to share our growing opportunities and recent media features highlighting our UK operations. Acusensus’ UK operations began its first long-term program in Devon & Cornwall in August 2024, followed by a trial in Greater Manchester this month, an initiative featured on BBC Breakfast on August 30, 2024.

In August, Devon and Cornwall Police began utilising Heads-Up for the UK’s first long-term use of the solution, running a 12-month project following a trial earlier this year. The successful two-week trial happened in February and March 2024, with Heads-Up detecting 408 seatbelt and 162 mobile phone offences. The trial highlighted the distracted driving and seatbelt violation problem in Devon & Cornwall, and the counties are now looking to address this problem further.

The use of Heads-Up is supported by Alison Hernandez, Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and chairman of the Vision Zero South West road safety partnership – “By embracing new technology such as the Acusensus system, we have the opportunity to improve driver behaviour and consequently make our roads safer for everyone.”

Following our Devon & Cornwall project expansion in early August, Acusensus is beginning a trial with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM). The region is set to deploy Heads-Up to detect illegal mobile phone use and seatbelt non-compliance in Greater Manchester beginning September 3, 2024. This initiative was highlighted on BBC Breakfast on August 30, 2024.

This trial follows Safer Greater Manchester’s launch of the ‘Touch.Screen’ campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving. From 2014 to 2023, 138 people were killed or seriously injured in road traffic collisions in Greater Manchester where distracted driving played a role. Additionally, in 2020, one in four road traffic deaths in Greater Manchester involved someone not wearing a seatbelt.

Greater Manchester Police is now one of the ten police forces in the UK that have trialled the Heads-Up solution. According to Peter Boulton, TfGM’s Network Director for Highways, this initiative will help TfGM “gain a better understanding of how many drivers break the law in this way, whilst also helping to reduce these dangerous driving practices and make our roads safer for everyone.”

Similar to the initial Devon & Cornwall trial, the trial in Greater Manchester will allow TfGM to refine future road safety campaigns to improve compliance with mobile phone and seatbelt use by drivers.

Acusensus looks forward to continue deploying our technology to remind people of safe driving practices, leading to changed behaviours and more lives saved.

Three Acusensus camera systems have been installed at various locations throughout Cornwall, with the specific spots changing regularly over the course of the 12-month project. These cameras are part of a broader effort to enhance road safety across the county’s extensive 13,500-mile road network.
Alison Hernandez, Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly, and chairman of the Vision Zero South West road safety partnership, is supportive of the deployment of the new technology, and highlights ‘the importance of improving driver behaviour to enhance road safety for all’.
Geoff Collins, General Manager for Acusensus UK, echoed this sentiment, describing the project as a significant milestone for UK road safety, saying ‘our technology is now being used to directly deal with poor driving behaviours, helping to break those bad habits so making our roads safer for everyone’.

The UK Department for Transport recently published a concerning report on road safety, utilising data captured by Acusensus technology at 25 sites across England in October and November 2023, and at five sites in Scotland in spring 2024. The analysis reveals alarming statistics on distracted and non-restrained driving. The findings suggest that there may be approximately 50,000 instances of drivers using hand-held phones daily, and around half a million motorists driving without wearing seatbelts.

General Manager of Acusensus UK, Geoff Collins, said “The scale of the risk on UK roads is now alarmingly clear. Distracted driving and not using a seatbelt are two of the ‘fatal five’ risk factors, most likely to lead to serious harm when driving. The Acusensus technology not only helps to provide this background understanding, but it can also be used to provide violation records that can be used for prosecution or education purposes, which has now been successfully carried out by many UK police forces. If used as part of a long-term strategic initiative, this solution would allow for a measured approach to improve driver behaviours, making the roads safer for everyone.”

Geoff Collins and the Acusensus team are now turning their focus to a further analysis of the DfT figures. This includes examining the varying risks of distracted and unrestrained driving at night, as well as the broader risks associated with van drivers in the UK.
